World Oceans Day – June 8
June 8 marks World Oceans Day—a time to celebrate the extraordinary beauty of our oceans and reflect on the vital role they play in sustaining life on Earth. This year’s theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” invites us to marvel at the ocean’s rich biodiversity and inspire simple ways to protect it.
Here on Phillip Island and across the Bass Coast, we are fortunate to witness marine wonders every day. From the charm of our iconic Little Penguins to the breathtaking sight of 80-tonne Southern Right Whales, this coastline is teeming with awe-inspiring wildlife. For over 30 years, Wildlife Coast Cruises has connected people to these natural treasures through unforgettable encounters on the water.
But celebrating the ocean also means protecting it. At Wildlife Coast Cruises, conservation is a core part of who we are. We’ve eliminated single-use plastics, support local plastic-free businesses, and regularly host beach clean-ups. Our mission goes beyond the cruises—we aim to inspire a deeper respect and responsibility for our marine life.
The threats are real: each year, approximately 300,000 whales, dolphins, and porpoises are lost to entanglement in fishing gear. Closer to home, our seals, dolphins, whales, and seabirds face challenges from pollution, entanglement, and human disturbance.
This World Oceans Day, we invite you to reflect on the small actions that can lead to big changes. Choosing reusable items, supporting sustainable seafood, joining local clean-ups, and keeping a respectful distance from wildlife while boating are all simple ways to make a lasting impact.
Come aboard this winter for a cruise filled with wonder—and help us protect the wildlife we all treasure. Every effort counts. Keep reducing plastics. Give wildlife the space they need. And let’s keep the ocean full of wonder for generations to come.
