The Winter Migration

Thinking about joining our winter whale cruise? Here’s a closer look at what the experience can offer, and what makes each trip out on the water so unique.

From June to August, our 3 to 4 hour cruises are scheduled daily from San Remo and Rhyll, right during the peak of the annual whale migration.

Humpback whales are the most common visitors, travelling north along the Victorian coastline toward Queensland. They often move in small groups, surfacing every few minutes as they steadily continue their journey.

Spotting Whales at Sea

Whales can be found anywhere from close to shore to several kilometres offshore. Our experienced crew and spotters are always scanning for signs like a distant blow, a tail slap, or a sudden breach.

We also stay connected with local whale watchers along the coast to improve our chances. While sightings are never guaranteed, we maintain a strong success rate each season. Every trip still carries that sense of anticipation.

Wild Encounters

Every whale encounter is different. Some whales pass by quietly, while others may display incredible behaviours like breaching, tail slapping, or lifting their flukes high before a dive.

We follow strict wildlife guidelines, allowing whales to approach on their own terms. Some are curious, others keep their distance. That unpredictability is part of what makes each experience genuine and memorable.

More than Just Whales

While humpbacks are the highlight, they are not the only wildlife you may encounter.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Bottlenose and common dolphins riding alongside the boat
  • Australian fur seals resting or playing nearby
  • Little penguins heading out to sea
  • Seabirds like shy albatross and Australasian gannets soaring overhead

You may even be lucky enough to spot a Southern Right Whale, a rarer but impressive visitor to these waters.

The Whole Experience

Beyond the wildlife, the journey itself is part of the adventure. Expect sweeping ocean views, fresh sea air, and the rugged beauty of Phillip Island’s coastline.

On board, you’ll find:

  • Indoor and outdoor viewing areas
  • Informative commentary from our captain & crew
  • Complimentary tea, coffee, and cake

Come Prepared

Conditions can be cool on the water, so we recommend bringing warm layers, a camera, and an open mind. Some days are quiet, others are extraordinary, and many fall somewhere in between. That’s the nature of wildlife experiences.

But when everything comes together, the ocean, the wildlife, and a little bit of luck, it can be something you’ll remember for a lifetime.
