Wild about the Prom!
The first half of October has brought us some truly remarkable wildlife encounters, especially with humpback whales. Our 2024 season at Wilsons Promontory is shaping up to be just as successful as the last two bumper years.
As the migration progresses, many of the humpback whale pods are now accompanied by their calves. It’s an incredible sight to see these young whales learning from their mothers as they navigate the migration route. These calves, already around six to eight meters long since birth and will drink up to 250 litres of their mother’s milk each day as they continue to grow.
But it’s not just the whales that make Wilsons Promontory special. The area is rich in other marine life and bird species, offering something exciting for every wildlife enthusiast. including:
• Australian Fur Seals
You can often spot these seals basking in the sun on the rocky shores of Seal Island. The breeding colonies at Wilsons Promontory play an important role in the overall Australian fur seal population.
• Common Dolphins
Watch for these energetic dolphins, known for their acrobatic displays, as they hunt for food in Wilsons Prom’s vast waters. They travel in pods ranging from as few as ten to hundreds.
• Shy Albatross
A majestic and graceful bird, the shy albatross symbolising good luck at sea. They spend most of their time soaring across the ocean with its wide wingspan, measuring around 2.1 – 2.6m.
• Emus
The Prom’s Five Mile Beach is an excellent place to spot emus roaming the secluded coastal landscape.
With only a few weeks of cruising left this season, don’t miss your chance to experience this incredible wildlife up close. Enquire today!
