Whale watching at Wilsons Prom
From mid August, humpback whales can be sighted off the east coast of Wilsons Promontory as they start migrating back to Antarctic waters. During the next few months, pods of whales will be cruising past the Prom, and can usually be seen very close to the islands such as Cliffy Island, Seal Island, Rag Island, as well as the coves near the Prom Lighthouse.
See the map for a sample of the 2023 season sightings from our vessel Arafura Pearl. While most whales would have spent most of winter either breeding or giving birth, some whales will also take advantage of any food available on their journey. Whales can be seen feeding on bait fish along the Prom, an incredible sight to experience! Most whales will complete their migration by late November.
