Whale Muggings at the Prom!
Another fantastic week of whale watching at Wilsons Promontory. Encountering at least 32 whales over three cruises last week, with the largest pod consisting of 7 humpback whales!
There is currently plenty of whales in the area, and most whales are displaying surface active behaviour, such as breaching, tail slapping and displaying their pectoral fins.
Best of all, some whales have been very curious about the boat and approached us within metres, stopping to have a closer look and even swimming under the boat.
This is called a whale mugging, and engines could not be started until the whales moved away, what a problem to have!
Last week we also spotted dozens of Common Dolphins bow riding the waves, and a diverse variety of seabirds including juvenile Giant Southern Petrels (pictured above), Albatross and Gannets.
We are now over halfway through the Prom Whale Cruise season – with 6 weeks to go, book now to ensure you don’t miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime experience of these majestic gentle giants and other incredible marine life.
