Whale Action at Wilsons Promontory

October 1, 2026

Wilsons Promontory is absolutely alive with humpback whale activity, and our recent cruises have delivered some truly unforgettable encounters. From spectacular breaches and tail slaps to curious whales gliding alongside the boat.

Over the past few weeks, guests have witnessed some incredible behaviour:

  • Breaching action: One particularly energetic whale breached 23 times in just 23 minutes, while another encounter saw around 25 minutes of tail slapping and communication between whales.
  • Serious mugging: We’ve had whales come right up to and hang around the boat for 40 minutes or more, giving everyone plenty of time to watch the action unfold, and get some amazing photos.
  • Growing pods: Larger groups have been travelling through the area, with one impressive pod reaching eight whales.

And the whales haven’t been the only highlight. Large groups of dolphins have been joining the action too, racing through the water, feeding and weaving their way around the boat as whales surface nearby.

It’s been a fantastic reminder of just how wild, unpredictable the waters around Wilsons Prom can be.

Come and see the action

Departing from Port Welshpool, on our Wilsons Prom Whale Cruise every trip is different and you never quite know what these majestic mammals will get up to.
