Fur Seals at play

March 23, 2026

By around four months of age, the fur seal pups at Seal Rocks are now full of confidence and curiosity, spending more time in the water than on the rocks. What looks like playful behaviour is actually vital training for survival.

Pups practice leaping clear of the water, building strength and coordination. Around the colony, they learn the tricky skill of getting on and off rocks, timing their movements with the surge of the waves. These early lessons are essential for navigating their rugged coastal home.

Much of their day is spent chasing one another through the water, developing speed and agility. You might even spot them grabbing bits of seaweed, shaking and tearing it apart. It is all practice for handling real prey later on.

These young seals are also incredibly inquisitive. They often approach boats, popping up for a closer look, seemingly as curious about us as we are about them. Despite their growing independence, they stick close to their mates, forming small groups for safety and learning.

Every leap, chase, and playful interaction is preparing them for the next stage of life, finding food and avoiding predators.

Join us on a Seal Cruise this autumn to watch these wonderful and playful pups!
