Making a splash
Humpback whales are known to communicate through touch, sound and making a splash. As they migrate along our coast we mostly see them travelling in pairs or pods of 3.
These small pods often travel within kilometers of each other. While their grunts, squeals and other sounds can travel far through water, sometimes whales have to ‘speak’ louder to be heard.
On a windy day last week, whale enthusiasts on the Winter Whale Cruise were delighted to witness what seemed like an elaborate ‘chat’ between two pods. One whale was seen continuously tail-slapping on the surface of the water, while another whale 500m away was a serial breacher, launching her body out of the water 10 times in a row!
