Bottlenose dolphins off the Cape
In the last few weeks, bottlenose dolphins have been a regular highlight on our Cape Woolamai Cruise, often seen riding the bow and playing in the wake as we pass the rugged coastline.
These dolphins are one of two species found in the bay and around Phillip Island. Bottlenose dolphins are larger than Common dolphins and have a more uniform grey colour. Both species are built for life in the ocean, with streamlined bodies and curved dorsal fins that cut smoothly through the water.
Fin ID at Sea
Each dorsal fin carries unique markings, nicks, and scars, allowing individuals to be identified over time. We keep a photographic catalogue of their fins, contributing to ongoing research and a better understanding of local dolphin populations. Two individual dolphins as in the above photographs have been sighted in the same area over a few days. They were inquisitive and seemed to enjoy showing off their acrobatic moves as they ride the bow of the boat.
Speed, Intelligence & Curiosity
Highly social and intelligent, bottlenose dolphins live in pods and are known for their playful behaviour and strong social bonds. They communicate using a range of sounds, including signature whistles, and often work together when feeding, herding fish and squid with impressive coordination.
As the weather and ocean temperatures cool, we expect to have more regular dolphin sightings as they move close to shore in search of prey. Join us on the Cape Woolamai Cruise this autumn, enjoy the beautiful scenery and you might be lucky to see these incredible acrobats of the sea!
