August Whale Action at Wilsons Prom

August 21, 2025

Wilsons Promontory Whales Update 21st August – It has been an incredible beginning to our Wilsons Prom Whale Season, with around 37 whales spotted across five cruises in the past week. We were lucky to enjoy a few calm, glassy days on the water, making the encounters even more special.

The whales have been busy with lots of feeding documented along the coast, a great sign that these humpbacks may linger in the region for longer periods. Citizen science photographer Ian Ryan captured a spectacular moment of a humpback lunging with its mouth wide open, while a lone crested tern hovered above, ready to snatch a quick overspill feed.

Most sightings have been of subadults and yearlings, showing plenty of surface activity with tail slaps, pec slaps and even some breaching. We also had a few unforgettable encounters with curious whales coming right up to investigate the boat, including being mugged three times (when whales swim directly up to and under and the vessel).

This is the earliest in August we have run these cruises, and it already looks like the season is paying off with some remarkable experiences for guests.

What a fantastic time to book in on a Wilsons Prom Whale Cruise with us, and as a bonus take 10% off midweek Wilsons Prom Whale Cruises*.

*Offer Ends 19/09/25 – Excludes group pricing, not in conjunction with any other offer
